Appearance: Big deal or not?

When I think about the meaning of appearance, a lot of words come in mind: look, style, first impression, acceptance, tolerance, real, projection, belief, trust. The truth is everything is appearance. Often, when talking about appearance people make reference to fashion or to the look.  But, they do not realize that word means much more than that.  It is the way you present yourself to others, or the way others present themselves to you.  In general, appearance is a projection of what you think is real. That’s why we lie, brag and sometimes pretend.  What you see isn’t always what it is.
Here is my question to you; does appearance play a big part in your life?
And do not forget: every opinion matters!

  1. Here is my opinion. I think appearance plays a big part of life. It doesn't necessarily have to be the looks but in reality it's how you carry yourself. Attitude. Your character. Confidence. Isn't that what determines your appearance to others?? How people actually see you. You can look at someone who looks amazingly stunning but with a bad attitude or character, would you actually want to be near that person. The answer is simple, no. Yes, the looks or fashion plays a part, well according to society it does. But that's the icing on the cake, its nothing really.

  2. A different aspect....

Appearance is indeed a major part of life. Appearance can be a sensitive matter. We can state facts: This person looks healthy, ill, happy, sad, calm, anxious, pleased, annoyed, etc. On the other hand, appearance can be based on preferences totally and wrongfully skewed by society and by our upbringing: This person looks mean and dangerous, but this person looks kind and innocent. She looks pretty; she does not. Long hair is beautiful; short is not. Fair skin is beautiful while darker skin is not...OR VICE VERSA. Of course, those are not facts. What makes her/him pretty/handsome? In the perfect world, we should more open, accepting and not have prejudgments. We would surely be more united and at peace with ourselves and one another without preconceived notions based on appearance.

Want a better world...a better future for our children? We can start by understanding how greatly our preferences are influenced from society during childhood (as well as adulthood). We must do our best to break such unhealthy tends and raise our young ones to be more open and accepting. A study found that most children (of different ethnicities) thought darker-skinned dolls appeared more mean, frightening, unpleasant than lighter-skinned dolls (and vice versa). Unbelievable, sad, but true.

An abstract of the study can be found at the following link: http://articles.cnn.com/2010-05-18/us/doll.study.parents_1_white-children-black-parents-black-children?_s=PM:US .

We should, of course, teach our children what behaviors and manners are appropriate amongst whatever society we live in. We should teach them that inner beauty counts. They will then develop their OWN phenotypical preferences. With no taught or influenced prejudices, if ever possible, they can grow up saying, “I love her/him because of her/him with her/his style/fashion/sexiness being the icing on the cake.”

    Appearance: A big deal

  3. My definition of Appearance is the exterior aspect, given to the look of a thing or of a person. This thing appears to be something that it is NOT most of the times; it can appear fuzzy or attractive.
It is true that your appearance can have a deep influence on the manner in which others you consider and treat you, and vice versa. The image of our body is a part of our own picture, it can exercise an influence on the confidence that we have in ourselves and on what we do and do not do in life.
People might think that appearance is based on looks; it’s also a glimpse of who you are personality, temperament, disposition, mentality, and values. Looking good can make you feel good but it goes beyond that… it is not making yourself into the best looking person you can be, but it must also be “mind deep. I guess it’s important to value all the aspect of appearance because in the end it affects our lives as much as we let it…
